65% crude protein. stable for up to two years. perfect for fish farmers.
Barley protein concentrate
Montana Microbial Products developed a 65% protein concentrate produced from barley. Barley Protein Concentrate, BPC, has both superior nutrition and the volume to compete in the $10 billion/year market for protein ingredients in aquaculture feeds. BPC can replace fishmeal and has significant competitive advantages over other plant-based proteins.
Nutrition In feed trials with trout, salmon, and multiple other fresh and salt water species, BPC is equivalent to fish meal and superior to soy protein concentrates in protein availability, fish growth rates and feed conversion efficiency. BPC reduces water pollution with less waste management issues than soy and very low and digestible phosphorus compared with fishmeal. BPC is ideal for use in of recirculating aquaculture systems.
Performance and Marketability BPC was used at a 30% inclusion rate in the feed for 375,000 trout grown in commercial raceways over a two-year period. Fish were grown from fry to commercial weight and sold to market. There was no difference in growth, feed conversion efficiency or flesh quality between trout raised on the 30% BPC diet and trout raised in adjacent raceways on a conventional fishmeal diet.
Proven Process a one ton/day BPC pilot plant which replicates all the key process steps of a commercial production plant using the same process equipment. The pilot plant operated for two years 24/7 achieving consistent production and generating the engineering design data for a commercial production plant. BPC from the pilot plant was used in the commercial trout trial.
Protected US and international patents protect both the production process and composition.
FDA approved as aquaculture feed ingredient with AAFCO definition.
Supports aquaculture sustainability ratings and best aquaculture practices Barley is the lowest cost major grain and available in large quantities. Barley is not genetically modified, requires less fertilizer and fewer pesticides than other grains and grows in cold climates which limit alternative crops. The BPC process uses barley now fed to livestock and does not compete with human food. MMP produces BPC using a biological process without solvents or chemical residues.
Cost Competitive BPC is very profitable priced less than fish meal, and competitive with Soy Protein Concentrates. A co-product from the process adds significant value.
Our facilities
MMP operates a pilot plant in Melrose, Montana and a research lab in Missoula, Montana. The pilot plant is designed to run continuously using the same equipment as a commercial facility. The pilot plant produces 1 ton/day BPC but can be operated in batch mode to provide sample material for testing. A quality control lab is an integral part of the pilot plant.
The Research Laboratory in Missoula is used to look at process optimization and identify, develop and experiment with new products. Current projects include beta glucan extraction and lactic acid production from barley.
